The Amazing Snowman Buy · $499

Snow for Christmas photo sessions

For Christmas mini sessions and Santa photo sets, the $499 Amazing Snowman works as a prop and a snow machine at once: a 27-inch snowman blowing flakes 15 to 20+ feet from his mittens.

The flakes evaporate in under two minutes on average, GSE says, so outfits and props dry off between families. How the snow reads on camera depends on your light and lens, so do a test shoot first.

Who he fits

  • Photographers running Christmas mini sessions, especially in warm states where real snow never shows up.
  • Santa photo sets at malls, garden centers, churches and schools.
  • Outdoor sets under cover. He needs to stay out of the rain.
  • Sets with kids. Flakes falling around them gets a reaction, and he looks like part of the set when he's off.

Who he doesn't fit

  • Studios with seamless paper or props that can't get damp. The fluid is mixed with water, so test first.
  • Smooth studio floors where people walk. The manual warns about slippery residue, linoleum in particular.
  • Sets where nobody can watch him. The manual says never to leave him running unattended.
  • Faces right in the plume. GSE's data sheet lists eye irritation for the undiluted concentrate, so aim the flakes to drift down, not at people.

This is Global Special Effects' own video of the Snowman running. It wasn't shot at an event like yours, but it lets you judge the snow for yourself before you buy.

Placing him on a set.

His snow comes out of his mittens and travels 15 to 20+ feet, so the flakes fall well past where he sits. Our suggestion: put him to one side and slightly behind the family, aimed across the frame, so the snow falls between the camera and the background.

A light flurry is the setting GSE says evaporates properly, and it also keeps flakes from building up on clothes. Shoot a test frame or two at your usual settings before the first family arrives. We haven't tested him on camera ourselves, and GSE doesn't publish camera settings.

Two snowmen frame a set. The Snowman and Snow Woman bundle is $799 with two 6-packs of fluid.

Running a session day.

  1. 1

    Plan your tanks

One tank is about 45 minutes of snow. Run him only during each family's turn and a full day stretches much further.

  2. 2

    Power it safely

A GFCI outlet, a dry level surface, and a cord route nobody trips on. His cord is 70 inches.

  3. 3

    Use a remote plug

His switch works with a wireless remote outlet plug, so you can start the snow from behind the camera, as long as you can see him.

  4. 4

    Wrap up dry

Unplug him at the end of the day and store him somewhere cool and dry.

Good questions.

Does fake snow show up in photos?

It depends on light, background and shutter speed. GSE doesn't publish camera settings and we haven't tested him on camera, so take test frames first.

Will the snow get clothes wet?

The flakes evaporate in under two minutes on average, GSE says. Keep it a light flurry and aim it to drift down instead of at people.

Can I use him outdoors?

Yes, out of the rain, on a dry surface, on a GFCI outlet, and not below 25°F.

Is it safe for kids?

GSE calls the fluid non-toxic. Its data sheet lists skin and eye irritation for the undiluted concentrate. Keep the plume off faces and the bottles out of reach. See snow fluid safety.

How much does a day of sessions cost in fluid?

About $8 per 45-minute tank at $47 for six bottles, or about $5.22 with the three-pack deal. See what it costs to run.
