The Amazing Snowman Buy · $499

Snow machine for Christmas party

A snow machine for Christmas party use comes down to one choice: a hidden machine that makes background snow, or a centerpiece your guests walk up to. The $499 Amazing Snowman is the centerpiece.

If you only want snow falling behind the scenes, or you're only having one party, a plainer machine or a rental may suit you better. Here's how they compare.

The Amazing Snowman, a 27-inch snowman centerpiece for a Christmas party

Who he fits

  • Hosts who want the machine to be part of the party. GSE says guests pause, smile and take photos.
  • Families who'll use him every year on a porch or in a big room.
  • Kids' parties, with an adult running him. He's a decoration, not a toy.
  • Parties in warm places, where snow is the surprise. He needs an outlet, not cold air.

Who he doesn't fit

  • One party, one time. Renting may cost less. See the table below.
  • A hidden snowfall from above. He sits on the floor. Look at a hose machine instead.
  • A small apartment. His flakes travel 15 to 20+ feet.
  • Linoleum party rooms with lots of people on their feet, or a dance floor. The manual warns about slippery residue.
  • Kids playing right next to the machine. The manual says to keep him out of reach of small children.

Buying the Snowman costs about as much as two or three rentals at those prices, before you count delivery or your time. If you'll use him for more than a couple of parties, buying starts to make sense. Prices are from each seller's site, and other rental companies charge different rates.

Running him at your party.

  1. 1

Choose his spot before guests arrive

A covered porch or the long side of a big room works well, on a dry, level surface. Plug into a GFCI outlet. Keep him away from steps.

  2. 2

    Mix one bottle and test

Pour one 2 oz bottle into the tank and fill with water. Allow about 30 seconds for the first snow. Set the knob to a light flurry.

  3. 3

    Save him for the moment

A tank lasts about 45 minutes, so you can run him for the arrival, the photos or the kids' big moment. A remote outlet plug starts him from across the room, if you can see him.

Good questions.

How long does fake snow from a snow machine last?

For the Amazing Snowman, GSE says the flakes dissipate in under two minutes on average. Its spec sheet gives 30 to 120 seconds.

Is it better to rent or buy a snow machine for a party?

For one party, renting may cost less. At Freedom Fun's $229 to $279 for a 3-foot snowman, the $499 Snowman costs about two or three rentals, before delivery or your time.

How much fluid will I need?

One 2 oz bottle per tank, about 45 minutes. The 6-pack in the box covers about 4.5 hours of snow. Extra 6-packs are $47.

Can kids play in the snow?

They'll want to, so keep an adult at the machine. He's an electrical product and not a toy. GSE describes the fluid as non-toxic, and its data sheet lists skin and eye irritation for the undiluted concentrate. See snow fluid safety.

Will he work at an outdoor party?

Yes, on a dry night above 25°F, out of the rain, on a GFCI outlet.
