The Amazing Snowman Buy · $499

Storefront snow machine

A storefront snow machine needs to make people stop at your door, and the $499 Amazing Snowman does that by being the attraction himself: a 27-inch snowman blowing flakes 15 to 20+ feet at your entrance.

He's a good fit for a staffed shop door and a poor fit for a display that runs by itself after hours. We have no foot traffic or sales numbers for him, and we won't guess.

The Amazing Snowman and Snow Woman, a pair for each side of a shop door

Who he fits

  • Boutiques, restaurants and hotel entrances with staff near the door.
  • Busy shopping days, run in stretches when people are walking by.
  • A holiday photo spot. GSE says people pause, smile and take photos rather than just walk past.
  • Shops in warm climates, where snow is more of a surprise.
  • A pair on each side of the door, with the bundle at $799.

Who he doesn't fit

  • Displays that run with nobody there. The manual says never to leave him running unattended, so he isn't for after-hours windows.
  • Shallow display windows. His snow travels 15 to 20+ feet, so a small window box gives it nowhere to go. Our suggestion is to test first.
  • Automatic programs or DMX. He has an on/off switch and a knob. GSE's T-1400 ($2,495) has DMX and timers.
  • Smooth tile at the door. The manual warns about slippery residue and says to warn passers-by.
  • Uncovered spots in the rain, or sidewalks you don't control. Check with your landlord or city first.

This is Global Special Effects' own video of the Snowman running. It wasn't shot at an event like yours, but it lets you judge the snow for yourself before you buy.

What a Saturday costs to run.

A tank of about 45 minutes uses one 2 oz bottle, or about $8 of fluid at the $47 six-pack price. By our math, a two-hour stretch takes about three tanks, or about $24. The 3-pack deal at $94 (18 bottles) brings that closer to $16.

You don't have to run him all day. His switch works with a wireless remote outlet plug, so someone at the counter can start him when people are nearby, as long as they can see him.

Setting up at the door.

  1. 1

    Choose the spot

Put him on a dry, level surface under cover, away from steps, with a GFCI outlet in reach. His cord is 70 inches.

  2. 2

    Aim away from the doorway

Point the flakes along the storefront rather than straight at your entrance, so people don't walk through a slick patch. That's our suggestion, based on the manual's floor warning.

  3. 3

    Keep it a light flurry

GSE says a light flurry evaporates properly. Heavier snow can settle on the ground and get slippery.

  4. 4

    Shut down at closing

Turn him off before you leave, unplug him, and bring him in. The manual says to store him somewhere cool and dry when you're done with him.

Good questions.

Can a snow machine go in a store window?

Only if someone is there to watch it and the space is big enough. The Amazing Snowman throws snow 15 to 20+ feet and shouldn't run unattended. Test before you commit to a window display.

Will it bring more customers in?

We don't have numbers for that, and neither GSE's page nor ours promises it. GSE's claim is that guests pause, smile and take photos.

Can I leave him outside overnight?

Don't. The manual says not to place or store him anywhere damp or wet, and to unplug him when he's not in use.

Is the fluid safe around customers and their pets?

GSE describes it as non-toxic and safe for people, pets and plants. Its data sheet for the undiluted concentrate lists skin and eye irritation. See snow fluid safety.

Can I buy several for a shopping center?
