The Amazing Snowman Buy · $499

Church Christmas snow machine

A church Christmas snow machine works best as one snowy spot at a door, patio or live nativity, and the $499 Amazing Snowman is built for that kind of job. He won't fill a sanctuary with snow.

He's 27 inches tall, runs from a regular outlet, and throws flakes 15 to 20+ feet. Volunteers get one switch and one knob, with nothing to assemble.

Who he fits

  • Greeting families at a covered church entrance on Christmas Eve.
  • A live nativity, Christmas market or outdoor carol sing on a dry night above 25°F.
  • A children's program or fellowship hall party, with the snow landing on carpet or a mat.
  • Churches in warm places. He doesn't need cold air.
  • Volunteer crews with no sound or lighting tech. He runs from an on/off switch.

Who he doesn't fit

  • Snow falling over a full sanctuary. He sits at floor level and blows in one direction. GSE calls him a "starter" option for small-scale use.
  • Linoleum aisles and hall floors with people walking through. The manual warns about slippery residue, on linoleum in particular.
  • A quiet service moment, unless you test first. GSE publishes no noise figure for him.
  • Events with nobody free to watch him. The manual says never to leave him running unattended.
  • Top of the church steps. Keep him on a dry, even surface away from ledges and steps.

See the real one.

This is Global Special Effects' own video of the Snowman running. It wasn't shot at an event like yours, but it lets you judge the snow for yourself before you buy.

What a Christmas Eve costs to run.

One 2 oz bottle plus water fills the tank, and that gives you about 45 minutes of snow. By our math, a 90-minute gathering takes about two tanks, or about $16 of fluid at the $47 six-pack price. A 6-pack comes in the box, and that is enough for about 4.5 hours of snow in total.

GSE guarantees a 3-year shelf life for the fluid, so leftover bottles can wait for next year's program. Store them closed, somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.

Setting him up at church.

  1. 1

    Pick a dry, level spot

Away from steps and ledges, with a GFCI outlet in reach. His cord is 70 inches long. Aim him so the flakes don't land on a walkway with a smooth floor.

  2. 2

    Test at rehearsal

Mix one bottle with water in the tank, flip the switch and allow about 30 seconds for snow. Listen for noise, and see how far the snow reaches in your space.

  3. 3

    Keep it a light flurry

Use the knob. GSE says a light flurry evaporates properly, and heavier snow can build up on the ground and get slippery.

  4. 4

    Give one adult the job

Someone stays with him while he runs, warns people about the floor, and shuts him off before the tank gets down to a pint. The pump doesn't stop by itself.

Good questions.

Can we use a snow machine inside a church?

GSE says the Amazing Snowman is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, though the manual recommends outdoors. Watch for smooth floors. GSE's documents don't mention smoke alarms or sprinklers, so ask your building manager first.

Is the fluid safe around children?

GSE describes the fluid as non-toxic and safe for people, pets and plants. Its data sheet for the undiluted concentrate lists skin and eye irritation. Adults should handle the bottles. See snow fluid safety for details.

Is it loud?

GSE publishes no noise figure for the Amazing Snowman. Run him at rehearsal before you plan him into a quiet moment.

How far does the snow go?

About 15 to 20+ feet from his mittens, in the direction you point him.
